2nd LOI finding out and sorting out
2ND LOI (Inventions and their impact on our lives)
In groups the young inventors classified the inventions in their homes according to need or purpose they fulfilled. It was interesting how they were able to identify the inventions at home and put them under various categories. They were also able to bring out the impact these inventions have had on their lives.

1st LOI formative assessment
SCAMPER CUP
Young inventors were given a paper cup each. Using glue,
strings and rubber bands only, they were asked to come up with a useful
invention.
S Substitute
What could be substituted for the cup? What could be
substituted for the drink? What could be substituted for the taste? What could
be the other material for the cup (texture)?
C Combine
What could be combined with the cup? With the drink? What
other food items? What other non-food items?
A Adapt
How could the cup be adapted so it would be easy to hold?
So it would keep the drink hot or cold? So it would not get soggy?
M Modify
Magnify
Minify
Modify the cup (colour, odour ,thickness ,shape). What is
it like? If it were magnified, what might it be used for? What if it were
miniaturized?
P Put to other uses
What else could a paper cup be used for? Who else might use
it? Where else might it be used?
E Eliminate
What could be removed from a paper cup? How could it be
streamlined? Made lighter?
R Reverse
Rearrange
What if
it were upside down? Inside out? What other shape could it be?
Our young inventors put on their thinking caps and came up with
some brilliant and innovative inventions.

things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the
world." - George Washington.

SORTING OUT: 1ST
LOI (The need for Inventions)
CREATING A TIMELINE
I hear
I forget, I see I remember. Thus goes the saying, using the timeline exercise
and putting major events on paper would help us remember what we have done over
a period of time. Timeline provides us a bird’s eye view of the main events
that have happened over a period gives us the ups and downs and the major
events that have happened. In groups our young inventors created a timeline on
major inventions from 20 B.C. to 20th century.

Tuning in to the 1st LOI
TUNING IN
TO 1ST LOI
Students had to PREDICT or GUESS and write
about life 50 years ago using the prediction key. They were able to come to the
conclusion that life was very different in those days and people were slowly
working towards making life easier by creating or inventing new things.
Students also watched a power point
presentation in which they were shown how the inventions in the past came
about.
Provocation to 1st LOI
PROVOCATION TO
1ST LOI (The
need for Inventions)
The young inventors watched the video ‘The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch’.
They discussed the lighthouse keeper’s
wife’s invention and what she had to do before coming up with the solution for
her problem. After much discussion the young inventors had to imagine that the
mustard sandwiches didn't stop the seagulls from eating the lighthouse keeper’s
lunch. They had to come up with new ideas. They could draw or write what
happened next.
They came up with some brilliant ideas and an
understanding that all inventions start with a need.
