U.O.I- Who We Are

PROVOCATION

Today at Grade 3 we embarked on our first unit of inquiry under the trans-disciplinary theme; ‘who we are’. As a PROVOCATION to the unit students brought an ‘artefact’ from home that best describes them. Students very proudly gave a fantastic presentation by sharing their precious belonging with their class-mates by giving reasons why it’s precious to them. They brought from a cuddly stuffed toy, figurines, reading story books (esp. in their own mother tongues), using Lego pieces for problem solving strategies. Some of them were sports lovers and brought soccer ball, cricket ball, running shoes etc., while others were art lovers and brought their art-book, coloured pens etc. whereas an animal lover brought a lovely calendar of animals and a dancer presented her ankle bells which are known as ‘ghungroos’. Others surprised us with their abstract artefacts as one of them presented a geometry tool known as ‘protractor’ which encouraged him to excel in math and the other brought a hanger to remind him to use his thinking skills by using his brain like Albert Einstein and not to worry about people who would laugh at him…marvellous!!
After sharing with the class they then chose a partner with whom they again shared about their artefact. They then describe similarities and differences of each other using the ‘Venn Diagram’.This was a great start for this unit as this has left students lingering about the unit they are going to dive into…one of them already prompted out for us that we are going to studying about ourselves, so it’s going to be based on ‘Who we are’…well done kiddos.
